Common Vastu Dosha and Easy No-Demolition Remedies for Every Room

Most people intuitively sense when something is ‘off’ in a home, a persistent unease, heaviness in certain rooms, a feeling of never being able to fully rest or relax. What conventional interior design cannot explain, Vastu Shastra often can. Built on thousands of years of observation, experimentation, and codification by the ancient Vedic architects (Sthapatis), Vastu maps the flow of five elemental energies earth, water, fire, air, and space across the physical structure of a building. When these energies are balanced, life inside the building flows. When they are blocked, amplified in the wrong places, or absent where they should be present, the effects are felt in the health, finances, relationships, and mental state of the occupants.

The directional framework is central to Vastu. Each of the eight directions  north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest  governs specific life domains and is associated with a specific planet, element, and deity. The northeast (Ishanya) is the sacred corner of divine energy and should be kept open, light, and clean. The southwest (Nairutya) governs stability, grounding, and the head of the household it must be heavy, solid, and enclosed. The southeast (Agneya) is the domain of fire and governs energy, digestion, and kitchen activities. Violating these alignments creates what Vastu calls ‘Vastu Dosh’ defects in the energetic architecture of your home.

The seven signs that follow are the most common, most clearly felt, and most frequently encountered Vastu defects in Indian and international homes. For each, we provide the classic identification markers, an explanation of why this particular arrangement creates the effects it does, and a complete toolkit of non-structural remedies that you can implement immediately.

Main Door in the South-West - the Unstable Entrance

In Vastu Shastra, the main entrance of your home is its mouth, the primary gateway through which energy enters and sets the tone for everything within. The southwest direction (Nairutya) is governed by the earth element, by Nirrti (the deity of dissolution), and in planetary terms by Rahu. It is the direction of heaviness, stability, and endings. When the main door opens to the southwest, the home’s primary energy channel becomes aligned with dissolution rather than inflow.

Families living in southwest-entrance homes frequently report a pattern of instability that can be difficult to explain rationally: the male earning member of the household faces disproportionate career obstacles, financial drain seems to occur regardless of income level, and domestic arguments arise with unusual frequency over matters that would be minor in other contexts. Legal disputes and unexpected losses of money, of relationships, of opportunity are also classically associated with this defect.

The Problem: Quick Fix (No Demolition Required)

The south-west main door draws Rahu’s dissolving energy into the home’s core and hangs a large Vastu swastika (copper or brass) above the main door on the outside.

Heavy earth energy at entrance suppresses growth place two healthy green plants flanking the door the wood element counteracts excessive earth

Rahu’s influence creates confusion and poor decision-making affix a Vastu dosh nivaran yantra inside the door frame (upper inner edge)

South-west energy amplifies conflict place a pair of laughing Buddha figurines facing inward on either side of the entrance

Additional remedy: Paint the main door a deep green or dark teal. These wood-element colours introduce the energy of growth and movement, counterbalancing the static, heavy earth quality of the southwest. Avoid red or black for this door.

Kitchen in the North-East or South-West — Fire Out of Place

The kitchen is the fire zone of your home  in Vastu, it belongs in the southeast (Agneya), which is governed by Agni (the fire deity) and by Venus. This positioning ensures that the fire element’s qualities  energy, transformation, digestion, and vitality  are amplified in the correct zone and do not conflict with incompatible directional energies. When a kitchen is placed in the north-east (the zone of divine water energy and spiritual clarity) or the south-west (the zone of earth and stability), the result is a clash of elements that creates measurable disruption.

A north-east kitchen is one of the most serious Vastu defects recognised in the classical texts. The fire element’s heat placed in the water element’s sacred quadrant creates a conflict that manifests as persistent health issues particularly digestive problems, chronic minor illness, and energy depletion. Financial drain, where money leaves as quickly as it enters, is also strongly associated with this placement. The northeast is also the zone of clarity and spiritual receptivity; a kitchen here ‘burns’ this quality, leading to mental fog, poor judgment, and in some cases a pervasive spiritual restlessness.

The Problem: Quick Fix (No Demolition Required)

Fire element in NE burns divine water energy, causing health and financial issues         Place a large copper Vastu strip along the NE wall of the kitchen to create an energetic buffer

Cooking in wrong zone disturbs digestive health of occupants keep a bowl of sea salt (uncovered) in the NE corner of the kitchen, replace weekly

Fire-water conflict creates mental cloudiness and poor decisions place a small Shri Yantra or crystal pyramid in the northeast corner of the home (not kitchen)

South-west kitchen amplifies loss, argument, and stagnation introduces strong bright lighting; use yellow or orange accents to shift fire element northward

Practical Vastu tip: While cooking, always face east (ideal) or north. The direction you face while cooking directly influences the energy infused into the food and, by extension, the health of those who eat it. If your current kitchen layout forces you to face south or west while cooking, place a small mirror on the wall in front of you to symbolically redirect the energy.

Master Bedroom in the North-East — Rest That Doesn’t Restore

The master bedroom is the zone of authority, rest, and the household’s dominant energy. In Vastu, it belongs in the southwest in the direction of earth, weight, and settled power. Placing the master bedroom in the northeast creates a fundamental mismatch: the northeast is a light, spiritually active, sattvic zone where meditation and prayer are encouraged. It is not a space designed for the dense, restorative darkness that true sleep requires.

Occupants of north-east master bedrooms consistently report poor sleep quality, frequent waking at night, vivid or disturbing dreams, and a sense of never feeling truly rested despite adequate hours in bed. Over time, this sleep disruption compounds into more significant health issues. The head of the household also frequently reports a diminished sense of authority and decisiveness, a feeling that others do not take their leadership seriously or that their position is being subtly undermined. In families where the north-east bedroom is occupied by the elders, health deterioration tends to be faster than average.

The Problem: Quick Fix (No Demolition Required)

NE bedroom is too energetically active for deep sleep hang heavy, dark curtains (maroon, deep blue) on all NE-facing windows and walls

Insufficient earth energy causes restlessness and poor authority          Place a large, heavy piece of furniture (wardrobe or bookcase) against the NE wall to add weight

Sleeping with head towards north or east in NE room worsens effects ensure bed head faces south (ideal) or east; never north  this alone can dramatically improve sleep

Light and spiritual energy prevent deep delta sleep remove all religious idols and images from this room; keep the decor grounded and earthy

Critical warning: Never place a toilet, storeroom, or kitchen in the northeast under any circumstances, even if your bedroom is currently there. These are the three most damaging placements in classical Vastu and are difficult to remedy without structural change. If only one room can be corrected, prioritise the northeast.

Toilet or Bathroom in the North-East — The Most Critical Defect

If there is one Vastu defect that classical texts consistently identify as the most severe and the most urgently in need of remediation, it is the placement of a toilet or bathroom in the north-east corner of the home. The north-east (Ishanya) is governed by Lord Shiva, by the water element in its purest form, and by Jupiter  the planet of wisdom, grace, and divine blessing. In Vastu philosophy, it is the direction of the divine. Placing waste disposal and heavy water usage here is considered the equivalent of installing a drain directly beneath the home’s source of divine grace.

The effects reported by families with a north-east toilet are among the most consistent and dramatic in Vastu consultation: severe mental stress, anxiety disorders, depression, and in some cases psychiatric disturbances. Children in such homes frequently perform below their intellectual potential, as the northeast governs the zone of learning and cognitive clarity. Financially, the northeast toilet is associated with persistent stagnation — not necessarily dramatic loss but a frustrating inability to accumulate or progress, no matter how hard the occupants work.

The Problem: Quick Fix (No Demolition Required)

Waste in the sacred NE zone contaminates divine energy keep this bathroom spotlessly clean at all times; even a slightly dirty NE bathroom intensifies the defect

North-east toilet drains Jupiter’s blessings from the home place a Vastu dosh nivaran yantra on the bathroom door (outside face, upper section)

Heavy water usage disrupts the pure water element of NE keep a bowl of sea salt (or rock salt) inside the bathroom, replacing it every 7 days

Energy drain causes mental fog and learning difficulties hang a small camphor diffuser in the bathroom; burn camphor here every morning and evening

The bathroom door amplifies negative outflow when left open keep the bathroom door closed at all times; attach a self-closing mechanism if possible

Powerful additional remedy: Place a live green plant (money plant or pothos) just outside the north-east bathroom door. This introduces wood element energy that partially neutralises the water-waste conflict. Keep it healthy and well-watered. A dying plant in this position worsens rather than helps.

Missing South-West Corner — The Unstable Foundation

Many homes, particularly those built on L-shaped or irregular plots, have a missing or truncated south-west corner. This is called a ‘Vastu Khand’ (cut) in the classical terminology and is considered one of the most destabilising configurations possible. The southwest governs the earth element in its densest, most anchoring form. It is the direction of Nairutya  associated with the ancestors, with grounding, with permanence, and with the quiet authority of those who carry responsibility for the household.

A missing southwest creates a home that literally lacks its grounding corner. The occupants feel this as a persistent sense of instability and impermanence, frequent relocations, inability to settle, a sense that life is always in a state of flux that cannot be resolved. Relationships tend to be unstable, commitments difficult to maintain, and financial savings difficult to accumulate. The earning member of the household may find their career positions precarious or short-lived. In extreme cases, the family may find themselves unable to remain in the property for more than a few years.

The Problem: Quick Fix (No Demolition Required)

Missing SW corner leaves home without its grounding foundation place very heavy ceramic pots, stone sculptures, or large boulders in the SW zone to add earth weight

Lack of earth element creates instability in relationships and career use deep ochre, brown, and terracotta colours exclusively in SW rooms and corner

Nairutya energy unanchored causes frequent disruption and upheaval bury a small copper Vastu pyramid in the soil of the nearest SW garden area

Ancestors’ zone is unprotected, weakening family continuity place framed photographs of ancestors in the SW corner of the living room

Vastu wisdom on plot shape: A square or rectangular plot is considered the most auspicious in Vastu Shastra. L-shaped, T-shaped, or triangular plots all have inherent directional defects. If you are yet to purchase a property, prioritise a regular rectangular plot with the longer axis running north-south. If you already own an irregular plot, the remedies above significantly reduce the impact but cannot fully substitute for the missing corner’s energy.

Staircase in the North-East or Centre — Energy Spiralling Wrong

The staircase is one of the most energetically active structural elements in any multi-floor home. It is a channel of movement not just for people, but for the flow of energy between floors. In Vastu, staircases are recommended in the south, southwest, or west portions of the home, where their upward-spiralling energy is contained and directed by the heavier earth and metal energies of those zones. When a staircase is placed in the northeast or at the very centre of the home (the Brahmasthana), the effects are disproportionate to the seemingly simple architectural decision.

A central staircase is the most disruptive; as the Brahmasthana is considered the home’s energetic heart, the space that distributes vitality to every room and occupant. Placing a staircase here is the architectural equivalent of drilling a hole through the centre of the heart. Occupants in such homes frequently experience persistent health issues that are difficult to diagnose, a pervasive sense of exhaustion, and career stagnation that seems to have no rational cause. Children’s health and educational performance are also often affected. A northeast staircase draws energy upward and outward through the sacred divine corner, creating financial drain and loss of mental clarity.

The Problem: Quick Fix (No Demolition Required)

Centre staircase pierces the Brahmasthana (energetic heart of home) place a large, healthy green plant at the base of the staircase to redirect upward-rushing energy

NE staircase drains divine energy upward and outward  Place a Vastu pyramid at the NE corner of the staircase’s lowest step

Stairs in wrong zone create career obstacles and health depletion install warm, golden-toned lighting on the staircase to stabilise the energy channel

Clockwise vs anti-clockwise spiral affects energy direction ensure the staircase rises in a clockwise direction when viewed from above — anti-clockwise is inauspicious

Central staircase depletes occupants’ vitality hang a large Vastu Om symbol or Swastika on the wall directly facing the central staircase

South-Facing Main Door Without Remediation

A south-facing main door is one of the most widely feared configurations in Vastu Shastra, and one of the most widely misunderstood. The classical texts do not categorically prohibit south-facing doors; they specify that south-facing doors require careful positioning within the southern wall and specific remediation. The south is governed by Yama, the deity of dharma and justice, and by Mars. It is a direction of powerful, determined energy that, correctly harnessed, supports authority, fame, and strong career outcomes. Incorrectly approached, it brings disputes, financial challenges, and an atmosphere of conflict.

The specific Vastu concern with south-facing doors relates to the pada (grid) system: a south-facing door placed in the Vithi or Grahi padas certain segments of the southern wall  is considered inauspicious. A door placed in the Jayanta or Mahendra padas, however, is considered capable of supporting fame, governmental recognition, and authority. Many historically significant buildings and temples have south-facing entrances deliberately, exploiting Yama’s connection to law, authority, and dharmic power. The problem arises when a south-facing door is placed in the wrong pads without remediation.

The Problem: Quick Fix (No Demolition Required)

South door in inauspicious pada draws Yama’s challenging energy hang a large copper or brass Vastu swastika above the door on the external face

Mars energy at entrance amplifies conflict and disputes          place two healthy green plants on either side of the main door; green neutralises Mars’s fire

South direction amplifies outgoing rather than incoming energy Install a brightly lit exterior light above the door  light above the door encourages energy inflow

Yama’s association with finality creates an atmosphere of endings place a nameplate with your full family name in silver or white letters identity anchors energy

Fire energy at door makes occupants quick-tempered keep the south entrance area absolutely clutter-free; clutter amplifies Mars’s agitation exponentially

The pada calculation: To determine whether your south-facing door is in an auspicious or inauspicious pada, divide the southern wall into nine equal segments. The door in segments 4 (Grahi - inauspicious), 5 (Vithi - inauspicious), and 6 (Pitru - inauspicious) requires remediation. A door in segments 3 (Jayanta - auspicious) or 7 (Sugriva - moderate) is more favourably placed. Consult a Vastu expert with a compass to identify your exact pada.

Working With Your Home Rather Than Against It

Every Vastu remedy is, at its core, a conversation with your living space. The pyramids, plants, colours, yantras, and salt bowls that Vastu prescribes are not superstitious accessories they are deliberate interventions that shift the energetic quality of specific zones using the principles of the five elements, directional magnetism, and the subtle influence of planetary energies on physical space.

The most powerful Vastu remedy, however, is often the simplest: cleanliness and order. A home that is clean, uncluttered, and lovingly maintained has a measurably different energetic quality than one that is neglected, regardless of its structural alignment. The prana (life force) in a clean, orderly space flows freely. In a cluttered, neglected space, it stagnates and stagnant prana creates exactly the conditions that Vastu defects compound: heaviness, confusion, illness, and financial obstruction.

Begin with the remedies most relevant to the defects you have identified in your home. Implement them one at a time, over a period of weeks, and observe the quality of life in your home as you do. Vastu corrections, unlike structural demolitions, are reversible, iterative, and cumulative. Each small correction builds on the previous one, and the combined effect of multiple well-placed corrections can be remarkably powerful.
